ANTaR - Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation
October 2009 Issue 16

Dear [firstname,fallback=friend],

A Better Way for NT Aboriginal communities

Sara Hamilton, the face of our A Better Way campaign.

If your government told you where and how you could spend your money, wouldn't you feel outraged?

If your government said it would only fix essential services to your property as long as you agreed to hand over control of your property for a fixed amount of time, wouldn't that sound ridiculous?

If someone came from outside your community and imposed upon you, your family and friends a system that you could plainly see would cause more problems than it solves, wouldn't you stand up and shout NO!

The truth is, this is how your Government treats Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory. In the NT this is the law. Aboriginal people have been standing up and shouting NO but their voices have been ignored.

The RIGHTS stuff

We've just released our latest RIGHTS stuff catalogue, featuring books, cards, toys, CDs, cushion covers, necklaces and more. Everything in our catalogue is created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or supports Indigenous rights.

We're also selling the Jukurrpa calendar and diaries again this year. These sold out the last two years so get your order in quickly!

This year we're also featuring cards designed by young people who are in contact with, or at risk of contact with the youth justice system in Tasmania. These young people are part of the mentoring program Meenah Mienne which aims to improve the emotional health and well being of youth at risk. The program was developed by elders and artists in the Aboriginal community in northern Tasmania.

Take a look at the new catalogue ...

ANTaR's new National Director, Mark Drury, joined us on 12th October.

Mark Drury has over 25 years experience in driving policy, projects and programs that educate, inspire and harness the power of individuals towards the common good.

He has a strategic focus and experience in building consensus with people who have diverse agendas and contrary opinions. He is focused on achieving real outcomes.

"As National Director of ANTaR, I want to work with and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations as they move forward. I want to build our capacity to organise and mobilise Australians as we express our desire for a fairer and more decent society. We will continue to pressure all governments to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations to make that real difference," said Mark Drury.
