40TH ANNIVERSARY OF ABORIGINAL TENT EMBASSY: TIME FOR CHANGE
25 January 2012
On the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, ANTaR urges consideration of a more inclusive national holiday.
“As we finally seek to address our Constitutional silence regarding the prior occupation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we should also reflect on the symbolism of our national day,” said ANTaR National Director, Jacqueline Phillips.
“January 26 is regarded by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Invasion or Survival Day, in recognition of their experience of dispossession and colonisation.”
An historic step towards recognition and equality
19 January 2012
ANTaR congratulates the Expert Panel on its extensive community consultation and detailed report and endorses its recommendations for recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia’s Constitution.
“The Expert Panel’s historic report presents a sound and practical proposal for bringing our Constitution into the 21st Century,” said Jacqueline Phillips, National Director of ANTaR.
Time to modernise our Constitution
20 December 2011
Responding to media comments about proposed changes to the race power, ANTaR today urged all political parties to await the Expert Panel’s final Report in January before ruling out particular reform options.
“The Expert Panel has worked tirelessly over the last 12 months to consult broadly with the community and to ensure that its recommendations have community support and are legally sound,” said Jacqueline Phillips, National Director,
Government commits to act to reduce Aboriginal imprisonment
28 November 2011
ANTaR has today congratulated the Federal Government on its positive response to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs report, Doing Time – A Time for Doing.
“ANTaR congratulates the Federal Government for recognising that the over- imprisonment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people is a national crisis and agreeing to take urgent action in partnership with State and Territory Governments”, said Ms Jacqueline Phillips, ANTaR National Director.
Aboriginal peak bodies, community welfare and public health groups from around the country are calling for a new direction in policies affecting Aboriginal Australians based on cooperation, not ‘intervention'.
The groups support new investment in secure jobs for Indigenous Territorians but raise concerns about the proposed extension of a program that withdraws social security payments from parents whose children don't attend school regularly.
The Federal Government’s announcement today of plans to extend its intervention in the NT reflects a missed opportunity to build a genuine partnership with Aboriginal communities in planning for their future.
“Despite broad calls for the language and style of ‘intervention’ to be abandoned, today’s announcements show a determination to continue on much the same course”, said ANTaR National Director, Jacqueline Phillips.
ANTaR today welcomes the Government ’s commitment to work in
partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and
organisations to develop a national plan to improve health equality.
Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon and Minister for Health
and Ageing, Nicola Roxon announced this morning that the National
Health Leadership Forum (NHLF) is to become the national representative
voice to Governments on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
Human rights in the spotlight at CHOGM
25 October 2011
ANTaR is concerned that security arrangements in place for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will impact disproportionately on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Perth and exacerbate the crisis of over-imprisonment.
The bi-annual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) officially opens today in Perth. In the lead up to the meeting, 700 additional police have been stationed around the city.
NRL Grand Final plants a hand for recognition
30 September 2011
Reconciliation Australia and ANTaR are encouraging ‘footy fans’ at this Sunday’s NRL Grand Final to plant a hand to recognise the contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make in sport—and the broader community.
A sea of 20,000 hands will be used to create the ‘Flag of Unity’, designed by Aboriginal artist Adam Hill, using the colours of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags.
The event will take place between 12noon and 5pm this Sunday, 2 October, in Cathy Freeman Park outside ANZ Stadium as part of pre-NRL Grand Final entertainment.
