Ideas for your community

Stamp out racism in your community. Hold events that acknowledge Indigenous people and celebrate their achievements. Try to get your local media involved, too.

  • RAP it. Propose and lobby to ensure that your local sporting or community group completes a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
  • NAIDOC. NAIDOC celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. You can support and participate in NAIDOC week celebrations.
  • Sorry Day. Commemorate the National Sorry Day on May 26 each year to acknowledge the Stolen Generations. Learn more about the Stolen Generation survivors in the Us Taken-Away Kids magazine and the Bringing Them Home report on the HREOC website. Also see the National Stolen Generations Alliance website and the National Sorry Day Committee website.
  • National Reconciliation Week. Each year National Reconciliation Week celebrates the rich culture and history of the first Australians. It’s the ideal time for all of us to join the reconciliation conversation and to think about how we can help turn around the disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Local Reconciliation Group. Join or help start a local ANTaR or reconciliation group. To find out more, contact your State/Territory ANTaR.
  • Local Media. Suggest that your local newspaper publish a special section on the racial and cultural diversity of your community.
  • Collaborate. Explore ways in which community organizations can work together to promote positive race relations and community diversity.
