Remote Indigenous Services report welcomed
03 December 2009
ANTaR has welcomed the first report of the Coordinator General for Remote Indigenous Services released today.
ANTaR National President, Dr Janet Hunt, says the report is honest about the state of the 29 Remote Indigenous Locations where the Coordinator-General currently has powers.
“It also recognises the many positive efforts being made by local Indigenous communities to address the problems they face, and urges governments to build on these strengths.”
“It highlights the continuing challenges which different government departments, jurisdictions and levels of government have coordinating with each other to address the urgent needs in these communities and urges clear actions to resolve these problems.”
“Most importantly it recognises that the ‘governance and capacity gap’ has to be dealt with if efforts to close the health, education and employment gaps are to succeed.”
