Survival Day 2009
22 January 2009
Since the Federal Government's historic apology to the stolen generation, Australians have been forced to re-evaluate their relationship with the Indigenous population.
As a result, celebrations for Australia Day will be different in 2009. Australia Day Council chief executive Warren Pearson said last year's apology gave the day a special significance, which was reflected in a dawn service on January 20th, held in Cooktown, far north Queensland.
"We're calling on all Australians to reflect on what we're getting right as a nation and to get to know other cultures in the nation, particularly indigenous culture, because Australia Day can be an important process in the reconciliation movement,'' Mr Pearson said.
He continued, "So from the ancient Australians to the newest Australians we celebrate what's great about Australia and what holds us together as Australians.''
